Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

Verse 10 is found in chapter 14 of 2 Kings. Amaziah challenges Joash of Israel, using language of pride and provocation that Joash answers with a parable about the thistle and the cedar. Amaziah persists, and the two kings confront one another. Judah is defeated, and Jerusalem suffers political humiliation with part of the wall demolished and treasures plundered. The episode shows the danger of interpreting a previous victory as a guarantee of permanent superiority. The narrative also uses irony: a simple parable had warned about Amaziah’s limits, but his ambition led him to ignore it.
