During his government, Tiglath-pileser III conquers several Israelite regions and deports the population. Meanwhile, Jotham rules Judah and continues to receive a relatively favorable evaluation, although the high places remain. The section juxtaposes Israel’s accelerating deterioration with Judah’s situation. Assyrian pressure is no longer distant: it enters Israelite territory directly and anticipates the definitive disappearance of the northern kingdom.
