And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus: and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof.

Verse 10 is found in chapter 16 of 2 Kings. Ahaz visits Damascus and is impressed by an altar. He sends the priest Uriah a model of the altar and orders the worship of Jerusalem’s temple to be modified according to that pattern. The scene is significant because the king does not merely adopt a foreign practice personally: he reorganizes the official worship of the temple. The traditional bronze altar is displaced and subordinated to the new design. Religious authority is inverted: the king acts as though he can redesign worship according to his political and cultural preferences.
