And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king's burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the brasen altar shall be for me to enquire by.

Verse 15 is found in chapter 16 of 2 Kings. Ahaz visits Damascus and is impressed by an altar. He sends the priest Uriah a model of the altar and orders the worship of Jerusalem’s temple to be modified according to that pattern. The scene is significant because the king does not merely adopt a foreign practice personally: he reorganizes the official worship of the temple. The traditional bronze altar is displaced and subordinated to the new design. Religious authority is inverted: the king acts as though he can redesign worship according to his political and cultural preferences.
