So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.

Verse 7 is found in chapter 16 of 2 Kings. Rezin of Syria and Pekah of Israel attack Jerusalem, creating the crisis known as the Syro-Ephraimite War. Ahaz seeks help from Tiglath-pileser of Assyria and sends the treasures of the temple and palace as payment. The king interprets the threat through an imperial alliance rather than waiting for the Lord’s intervention. Assyria responds favorably and conquers Damascus, killing Rezin. Yet the political solution places Judah under dangerous dependence. The episode shows how a decision made to solve an immediate threat can profoundly alter the kingdom’s future position.
