Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.

Verse 26 is found in chapter 17 of 2 Kings. After the deportation, the king of Assyria brings foreign populations to Samaria. These communities experience attacks by lions and request a priest to teach them the worship of the God of the land. The result is religious mixture: they fear the Lord but continue serving their own gods. The section explains, from the narrator’s perspective, the origin of a population whose religious identity will later become problematic. The issue is not simply the presence of foreigners, but a religion that does not abandon previous practices. The chapter concludes by reaffirming that the population did not truly follow the Lord.
