And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

Verse 14 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Kings. The account goes back to explain the fall of Samaria while Hezekiah also faces Assyrian expansion. Sennacherib’s army comes against Judah’s fortified cities, and Hezekiah initially attempts to purchase withdrawal through tribute. To gather the money, he uses treasures from the temple and palace. The strategy may appear temporarily reasonable from a political perspective, but the Assyrian threat continues. The narrative thus prepares a greater confrontation: the kingdom that had reformed its worship will still have to decide whether it ultimately trusts God before an imperial power.
