Verse 5 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Kings. Hezekiah begins to reign and distinguishes himself from his predecessors through a profound reform. He removes the high places, destroys the sacred pillars, and cuts down the bronze serpent because the people had begun worshiping it. The text highlights his trust in the Lord and his faithfulness to the commandments. Even Nehushtan, an object that had played a role in Israel’s history, must be destroyed when it becomes an object of idolatry. Hezekiah also resists the king of Assyria and recovers territory. Religious reform and political resistance are presented as connected to his trust in God.
