Verse 4 is found in chapter 20 of 2 Kings. Hezekiah becomes seriously ill and receives from Isaiah the command to set his house in order because he will die. The king turns his face toward the wall and prays, remembering his faithfulness. Before Isaiah leaves the courtyard, God responds and announces that years will be added to his life and that Jerusalem will be delivered. The sign of the shadow moving backward confirms the word. The scene shows that prayer is part of the relationship between God and the king, but also that divine response does not depend on a human formula. Hezekiah’s life remains under the sovereign authority of the Lord.
