And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.

Verse 9 is found in chapter 22 of 2 Kings. The priest Hilkiah finds the Book of the Law in the temple and gives it to Shaphan, who reads it before the king. The discovery functions as the turning point of the entire account of Josiah. The reform is no longer based solely on removing cultic objects, but is now directly confronted by a text defining the Lord’s will. The reading transforms the king’s perception of Judah’s spiritual condition. The written word becomes the criterion by which the nation’s religious practices must be evaluated.
