And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.

Verse 10 is found in chapter 25 of 2 Kings. Nebuzaradan arrives in Jerusalem and burns the temple, palace, and principal houses of the city. The walls are demolished and much of the population is deported. The burning of the temple is one of the most theologically painful moments in the book: the central place of Israelite worship is destroyed. The narrative does not present the building as magical protection against judgment. Its destruction demonstrates that the temple’s presence could not substitute for covenant obedience. Jerusalem is physically dismantled and socially emptied.
