Verse 2 is found in chapter 5 of 2 Kings. Naaman appears as an important, respected, and victorious military commander, yet his position cannot solve his skin disease. The young Israelite servant girl becomes the instrument who directs the powerful general toward Israel’s prophet. The social contrast is fundamental: the apparently insignificant person possesses the knowledge needed by the powerful man. When Naaman arrives with a royal letter, the king of Israel interprets the request as a political provocation. Elisha, however, understands the situation as an opportunity to demonstrate that there is a prophet in Israel.
