The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

Verse 27 is found in chapter 5 of 2 Kings. Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, secretly attempts to obtain what his master had rejected. He uses the prophet’s name to request goods from Naaman and then lies about his actions. The seriousness of the episode lies in turning an act of free grace into an opportunity for personal enrichment. The judgment upon Gehazi directly contrasts with Elisha’s conduct. The leprosy that had left Naaman symbolically passes to the servant. The narrative warns that prophetic ministry cannot be used for private gain and that internal corruption can destroy the integrity of one who represents a holy work.
