Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel.

Verse 26 is found in chapter 8 of 2 Kings. Ahaziah succeeds Jehoram and maintains the political connection with Ahab’s house. He joins Joram of Israel in a campaign against Hazael of Syria and visits the wounded king at Jezreel. This decision places Judah’s king within the sphere of a dynasty that has already been subjected to prophetic judgment. The chapter directly prepares for Jehu’s revolution. The family and military alliances of Judah’s kings are not presented as neutral matters: they affect their relationship to the history of judgment God is unfolding against Ahab’s house.
