Verse 20 is found in chapter 15 of 2 Samuel. David asks Ittai the Gittite to return, arguing that he has no obligation to share the king’s uncertain fate. Ittai responds by declaring his loyalty and accompanying David. As the procession leaves Jerusalem, the people weep. The scene contrasts the betrayal of many Israelites with the loyalty of a foreigner. It also shows David stripped of the outward signs of power, moving as a vulnerable king who depends on the loyalty of his companions.
