Verse 27 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Samuel. Ahimaaz wants to carry the news of victory to David, but Joab initially sends a Cushite. Ahimaaz insists and eventually runs as well. Along the way, David repeatedly asks whether Absalom is alive. The narrative creates tension because the king is more concerned about his son than about the military victory. His repeated question about the young man reveals that, for David, the defeat of the rebellion cannot be considered a victory while Absalom is dead.
