Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,

Verse 1 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Samuel. David’s last words present the king as one who received a word from the God of Jacob and whose ideal function is to rule with justice and the fear of God. The image of morning light after rain expresses hope for a government that produces life. David acknowledges that God established an everlasting covenant with him, even though his own house has not perfectly fulfilled the royal ideal. The passage thus maintains the tension between divine promise and human failure.
