Verse 13 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Samuel. The list of David’s mighty men begins with men whose military achievements display the extraordinary ability of the warriors surrounding David. The episode of the three who risk their lives to obtain water from Bethlehem highlights a loyalty that goes beyond personal interest. David refuses to drink it and pours it out before the Lord, treating it as though it were the blood of those who risked their lives. The scene turns the soldiers’ sacrifice into an act of profound symbolic value.
