And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD.

Verse 21 is found in chapter 6 of 2 Samuel. Michal despises inwardly the way David celebrated before the Lord and confronts him after the ceremony. David responds by defending his decision to humble himself before God and declares that he will continue celebrating before him. The contrast between the two characters reveals different attitudes toward kingship: Michal appears to evaluate conduct according to courtly honor, while David understands his position through dependence on the Lord. Michal’s final barrenness closes the scene on a tragic note.

Disse, porém, Davi a Mical: Perante o SENHOR, que me escolheu preferindo-me a teu pai, e a toda a sua casa, mandando-me que fosse soberano sobre o povo do SENHOR, sobre Israel, perante o SENHOR tenho me alegrado.
