Verse 17 is found in chapter 18 of Deuteronomy. Israel must not imitate divination, sorcery, human sacrifice, or consultation with the dead among the nations. In contrast, God promises to raise up prophets from among Israel to communicate his word. The criterion of revelation changes radically: the people must not seek to control the future through occult techniques, but listen to the word God chooses to communicate through his prophets.
