Verse 4 is found in chapter 24 of Deuteronomy. The laws concerning divorce and remarriage establish limits for a family situation that can produce permanent consequences. The legislation concerning skin disease also recalls the case of Miriam, connecting present regulations with the memory of a figure from an earlier generation. Deuteronomy thus uses Israel’s historical experience as a reference for the conduct of later generations.
