Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.

Verse 31 is found in chapter 28 of Deuteronomy. The curses begin with a structure parallel to the blessings but describe disease, drought, defeat, and loss of productivity. The reversal of agricultural and social conditions shows that the promised land does not automatically guarantee prosperity. Israel’s continued presence in it is connected with covenant faithfulness.
