Verse 6 is found in chapter 9 of Deuteronomy. Moses prepares the people for the conquest of Canaan and makes clear that victory will not result from Israel’s superior righteousness. The Canaanite nations are described as powerful peoples, but Israel will receive the land because of God’s faithfulness to his promise and also as judgment upon those nations. The passage rejects any interpretation of the conquest as a reward for Israel’s moral perfection.
