Verse 7 is found in chapter 9 of Deuteronomy. Moses recalls the episode of the golden calf and the rebellion that occurred while he was on the mountain. The people had recently received the commandments and yet made an image. The speed of the apostasy demonstrates why Israel cannot attribute its future success to some supposed natural faithfulness.
