The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Verse 6 is found in chapter 1 of Ecclesiastes. The book presents itself through the figure of Qohelet, traditionally associated with Solomon, although the identity and composition of the book have been debated. From the beginning, the expression “vanity of vanities” establishes the central problem: human activities, viewed from the perspective of their transience and limitations, do not produce lasting gain. The reference to generations coming and going introduces the contrast between human brevity and the continuity of the created world.
