All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

Verse 7 is found in chapter 1 of Ecclesiastes. The book presents itself through the figure of Qohelet, traditionally associated with Solomon, although the identity and composition of the book have been debated. From the beginning, the expression “vanity of vanities” establishes the central problem: human activities, viewed from the perspective of their transience and limitations, do not produce lasting gain. The reference to generations coming and going introduces the contrast between human brevity and the continuity of the created world.
