Verse 3 is found in chapter 11 of Ecclesiastes. The image of casting bread upon the waters and giving portions to seven or eight introduces an exhortation to act generously and accept uncertainty. No one knows what calamity may occur on earth, so waiting for absolutely secure conditions would prevent action. The observation about clouds and a fallen tree insists that some circumstances must be faced as they arise. Diligence requires acting without controlling every outcome.
