Verse 3 is found in chapter 12 of Ecclesiastes. The call to remember the Creator before the difficult days arrive uses a long series of poetic images to represent the deterioration of old age. Houses, windows, mills, doors, and sounds form a symbolic description of bodily weakening and the progressive loss of abilities. The refrain about vanity returns the reader to the opening theme: human life, though valuable, is temporary.
