And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

Verse 19 is found in chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. The comparison between wisdom and folly recognizes a real advantage of wisdom: it enables a person to live with greater discernment. However, both the wise and the fool ultimately face death and may leave their possessions to someone else. This limitation causes Qohelet frustration. The conclusion introduces a decisive theme of the book: eating, drinking, and enjoying the fruit of one’s labor can be received as a gift from God, but not as a human achievement capable of overcoming mortality.
