There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

Verse 24 is found in chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. The comparison between wisdom and folly recognizes a real advantage of wisdom: it enables a person to live with greater discernment. However, both the wise and the fool ultimately face death and may leave their possessions to someone else. This limitation causes Qohelet frustration. The conclusion introduces a decisive theme of the book: eating, drinking, and enjoying the fruit of one’s labor can be received as a gift from God, but not as a human achievement capable of overcoming mortality.
