Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.

Verse 18 is found in chapter 5 of Ecclesiastes. After describing the limitations of wealth, Qohelet returns to one of his recurring conclusions: eating, drinking, and enjoying the fruit of one’s labor is a good that God grants. The ability to enjoy appears as a divine gift, not simply as the result of accumulation. The person who receives this ability can live gratefully during the days God allows, even though the future cannot be controlled.
