In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.

The verse 21 is found in chapter 2 of Esther. Mordecai discovers a conspiracy by Bigthan and Teresh against the king and reports it to Esther, who tells Ahasuerus. The conspirators are executed, and the event is recorded in the royal chronicles. This seemingly secondary detail will later become crucial because Mordecai's action is recorded before he receives any reward.
