Even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.

The verse 14 is found in chapter 39 of Jeremiah. Jerusalem finally falls and Zedekiah is captured after witnessing the death of his sons. The temple and houses are burned and the people are taken into exile. In contrast, Ebed-melech receives a promise of protection because he trusted in Yahweh. The chapter thus distinguishes between the fate of a rebellious city and that of a person who acted faithfully.
