Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

Verse 1 is found in chapter 10 of Joshua. Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, fears the alliance between Gibeon and Israel and gathers other Amorite kings to attack the city. The Gibeonites ask Joshua for help, and God assures him that he need not fear because the enemies have been delivered into his hands. Israel’s response shows that the accidental covenant with Gibeon creates a new military obligation. The episode prepares one of the book’s most important campaigns and expands the conquest southward.

Y como Adonisedec rey de Jerusalem oyó que Josué había tomado a Hai, y que la habían asolado, (como había hecho a Jericó y a su rey, así hizo a Hai y a su rey;) y que los moradores de Gabaón habían hecho paz con los Israelitas, y que estaban entre ellos;
ORA, quando Adonisedec, re di Gerusalemme, ebbe udito che Giosuè avea presa Ai, e l’avea distrutta al modo dell’interdetto; e che Giosuè avea fatto ad Ai e al suo re, come avea fatto a Gerico ed al suo re; e che gli abitanti di Gabaon, aveano fatto pace con gl’Israeliti, e ch’erano nel mezzo di loro;
