Verse 6 is found in chapter 12 of Joshua. The chapter begins with the territory conquered east of the Jordan under Moses: the kingdom of Sihon and the territory of Og. Including these conquests reminds the reader that Israel’s possession did not begin with Joshua, but is part of an earlier history. Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh received these lands. The summary connects Moses’ work with the later distribution under Joshua and presents continuity in God’s guidance of Israel.
