Verse 4 is found in chapter 13 of Joshua. God declares to Joshua that much land still remains to be possessed despite the previous victories. This statement is fundamental for understanding the book: the conquest described should not be confused with an absolute and immediate occupation of all Canaan. Joshua receives responsibility for distributing the land even while territories remain unfinished. The divine promise and its historical fulfillment appear here as related realities developed progressively.
