Verse 8 is found in chapter 13 of Joshua. The inheritance of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh east of the Jordan is recalled. The territory already conquered under Moses is formally integrated into the overall allotment. However, the inhabitants of Geshur and Maacah are not expelled. This detail again shows that the language of territorial possession coexists with the existence of remaining populations, an important fact for understanding Israel’s later tensions with neighboring peoples.
