Verse 10 is found in chapter 22 of Joshua. When they reach the Jordan, the eastern tribes build a large and imposing altar. The other tribes immediately interpret the construction as possible rebellion against the Lord and prepare for war. The episode shows how central legitimate worship was to Israel’s identity: a second altar could appear to be a direct threat to the religious unity established by the law.
