Verse 32 is found in chapter 22 of Joshua. The explanation satisfies Phinehas and the leaders. It is acknowledged that the eastern tribes had not acted rebelliously, and the threat of war is abandoned. The altar is named Ed, "witness," because it was to serve as a memorial that the Lord is God on both sides of the Jordan. The narrative concludes by showing how communication and shared testimony prevent a civil war within Israel.
