Verse 4 is found in chapter 23 of Joshua. In his farewell speech, Joshua reminds Israel that God has fought for them and given the nation rest. However, he urges the people to remain faithful to the law of Moses and not associate with the remaining nations. Territorial conquest does not automatically guarantee future faithfulness. Joshua presents the main danger not as a new military coalition, but as the loss of spiritual identity through religious assimilation.
