Verse 16 is found in chapter 15 of Judges. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Samson, he breaks the ropes, and kills a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. After the victory he becomes intensely thirsty and cries out to the Lord, who provides water. The episode attributes Samson’s strength to the Spirit rather than to the object used as a weapon. The spring receives a name associated with the divine response to the judge’s need.
