Verse 5 is found in chapter 17 of Judges. Micah confesses to his mother that he took a large amount of silver and returns it. His mother dedicates part of the money to the Lord, but later an image is made. Micah also establishes a household of gods and an ephod and appoints one of his sons as priest. The narrator summarizes the situation by stating that there was no king in Israel and everyone did what seemed right in his own eyes. Domestic religion thus appears separated from obedience to the law.
