And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

Verse 48 is found in chapter 20 of Judges. The Benjaminites flee, and the cities of the tribe are destroyed. Israel kills men, women, and children and burns the cities. The severity of the episode shows that the civil war has produced devastating consequences for the entire nation. The story does not end by celebrating victory but leaves Israel with a nearly destroyed tribe and a crisis that must be addressed in the following chapter.
