But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

Verse 20 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. Jotham speaks from Mount Gerizim through the parable of the trees. The useful trees refuse to rule, while the thornbush accepts power and threatens to destroy the others. The parable criticizes Abimelech’s desire for rule without turning it into an abstract theory of leadership: its application is specifically directed toward the alliance between Abimelech and Shechem. Jotham also announces that the violent pact between them will eventually destroy both sides.
