And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

Verse 28 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. After three years, God sends a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the people of Shechem. Gaal challenges Zebul, and Abimelech prepares an attack. The narrative begins showing the fulfillment of Jotham’s curse: those who participated in violence against Gideon’s sons begin turning against one another. The conflict arises from within the alliance that had sustained Abimelech.
