Verse 3 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. Abimelech, Gideon’s son, persuades the inhabitants of Shechem to support him and kills his seventy brothers, except Jotham. The episode represents a radical break with Gideon’s refusal to establish a dynasty. Abimelech seeks power through family violence and political manipulation. His coronation at Shechem shows that Israel’s crisis now involves not only external threats but also internal struggles for dominance.
