And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

Verse 31 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. After three years, God sends a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the people of Shechem. Gaal challenges Zebul, and Abimelech prepares an attack. The narrative begins showing the fulfillment of Jotham’s curse: those who participated in violence against Gideon’s sons begin turning against one another. The conflict arises from within the alliance that had sustained Abimelech.
