Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.

Verse 2 is found in chapter 35 of Numbers. The Levites receive cities distributed among the different tribes, together with surrounding pasturelands. Since they do not possess a territorial inheritance comparable to the other tribes, these cities provide places of residence and sustenance. The distribution again expresses that Levitical service belongs to the entire nation and that all tribes participate indirectly in supporting those who serve in the sanctuary.
