Verse 1 is found in chapter 143 of Psalms. Psalm 143 combines confession of human inability with a request for guidance and deliverance. The psalmist knows that no human being can be declared righteous before God and therefore asks the Lord not to enter into judgment with him. Memory of ancient works directs the prayer toward the future: knowing God’s way, receiving his Spirit, and being led on level ground. Deliverance from enemies is integrated within a deeper request for obedience.
