Verse 14 is found in chapter 17 of Psalms. Psalm 17 presents a prayer of relative innocence and a request for protection from violent enemies. The language of divine examination shows that the psalmist wants God to know his intentions, not merely his outward actions. The adversaries are described through images of ferocity and self-sufficiency, while the petitioner asks to be kept as something precious under God’s shadow. The conclusion shifts hope from present prosperity toward the satisfaction of beholding the divine face.
